2007 SkillsUSA
Washington Leadership Training Institute
Washington, D.C.On September 15th, 2007, five Florida SkillsUSA state officers, along with Mr. Moye from Region 3 and Chef Nine from Region 2, departed from Orlando on a trip to Washington, D.C. for five days. This unforgettable experience taught us so much about our government, and we actually had the opportunity to visit congressmen who represent the state of Florida.
Our purpose on Capitol Hill: to be advocates for Career and Technical Education and the Carl Perkins Funding. We were there to make sure that funding from the government continues to go to the schools across the country that provide career and technical education to students. We were able to tour the city and see where all of the history textbooks get their pictures and information. It was an incredible trip.
After activities with other people from many states across America, icebreakers such as Surfer, Wave, Girl, and Baby Shark, it is safe to say we made some great new friends to look for at Nationals. Also, after "What are you doing?" and "Spy Monkey!" and hanging out with Meals on Wheels, it is safe to say that the team that went became much closer, maybe even a little too close. This was such an amazing experience that taught everyone a lot about themselves, others and our government. Overall, it was a lot of work, but a worthwhile trip nonetheless.
